The first few minutes Jan will take a moment to get to know your child/family and let them get comfortable with her and her camera. Jan’s photojournalistic style when taking pictures is to let the person's personality show through the pictures. The more relaxed the atmosphere, the better the pictures. Of course, family portraits also need a bit of posing, and each family is different.

What to wear?
Very simple garments with solid colors always photograph best. Couples or small groups should choose simple garments within the same tonal ranges. You can bring several outfits and accessories, and Jan can help decide what would look best for you to best fit the location and the look you are going for. Feel free to bring props for your shoot that fit your personality - this helps in creating a more “lifestyle” feel to the images as well. For children’s portraits, definitely bring several outfits and their favorite toys! Scarves, hats, and other accessories look especially cute and unique in images.

What about make-up?
Don’t worry if you have a sudden skin problem—blemish retouching is included in your session fee. To look natural, wear your normal evening make-up. Use eye shadow to bring out eyes. (Apply from outside of your eye towards the inside.) An extra coat of mascara will make your lashes appear longer and fuller. Lip gloss adds a shine but may washout lips if too shiny. Bring make-up for repairs and touch-ups or ask us to help with make-up applications. You will probably want to touch up your lipstick during your session, as well as apply a light, sheer powder to keep shine down.
